Medical Device Security and Safety: Manufacturer Perspectives and Challenges
Wednesday, December 5, 2012 - 1:30 - 3:00 PM

Session Overview

Mobile health device security has emerged as a critical issue. Present wherever a patient might be found, mobile health devices are crossing all healthcare enterprise boundaries and are increasingly prevalent both inside and outside of the healthcare enterprise.  The nation’s healthcare system is dependent on a national medical device network composed of a multitude of networks that span across all points of care.

The medical device manufacturer has a unique role in the development of a safe medical device industry including mHealth device implementation and operations.   This panel will discuss the manufacturers perspective regarding the design of medical devices from a security perspective. In addition, the panel will discuss how manufacturers relate to regulatory agencies for the surveillance and reporting of security related vulnerabilities for medical devices.  Finally, the issue of leveraging the incident command system model for managing a newly identified vulnerability will be discussed.

Session Objectives

  • Manufacturer perspective on challenges to delivering medical device security
