Session Overview

In hospitals and other healthcare settings, wireless technologies carry both amazing possibilities and unique challenges.
In this solution-oriented session, speakers from the Wireless Strategy Task Force (WSTF) of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) will provide specific, practical ways of managing the various challenges involved with implementing wireless technologies in the healthcare environment.
Chief among the unique challenges associated with wireless in the healthcare environment is the achievement of a reasonable assurance of patient safety, while enjoying the many benefits of wireless technologies. Quality of care and patient safety are among the chief goals of the healthcare industry. So any deployment of wireless technologies must contribute to, and not detract from, the accomplishment of those critical goals.
Speakers will also convey best practices from real-world examples of success. What has worked well, and what has not? What was learned? They’ll also share critical findings from recent meetings involving key stakeholders in the healthcare and information technology arenas, including the October 2013 AAMI/FDA Summit on Healthcare Technology in Nonclinical Settings, the 2012 AAMI Wireless Workshop, and other important events.
Speakers will also explore best practices related to accommodating wireless medical devices on the Wi-Fi architecture and supporting infrastructure, including bandwidth needed, and more.
The discussion of real-life case studies will provide practical help in avoiding the ever-present wireless “landmines.”  Additionally, attendees will have opportunities to interact with one another to share ideas, experiences, and best practices.
Interested parties ranging from clinicians to mHealth product developers to regulators will learn from this timely session.

Session Objectives
