The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health was established by Congress in 1990 as a 501(c)(3) public charity. We began our work in 1996 to facilitate ground-breaking research at the National Institutes of Health and worldwide. As an independent non-profit organization, we accomplish this by raising private funds and creating public-private partnerships to support the mission of the National Institutes of Health (NIH): conducting scientific research to extend healthy life and to reduce the burdens of illness and disability. Fundamental to the Foundation for NIH’s mission of supporting NIH is its role in creating partnerships—an acknowledgement that together, individuals and organizations can often solve problems better than any one entity can alone. For this reason, the foundation places high value on creating opportunities for networking—organizing and hosting symposia and conferences where diverse audiences interact, connect and learn from one another. These gatherings serve as incubators for new ideas, forums to share important research and discoveries, as well as outreach opportunities to new supporters. This is clearly evident in the mHealth Summit and its related activities.

mhealth alliance logo

The mHealth Alliance (mHA) advances mHealth through policy research, advocacy and support for the development of interoperable solutions and sustainable deployment models. Working with diverse partners, the mHA sponsors events and conferences, leads cross-sector mHealth initiatives and hosts HUB (HealthUnBound), a global online community for resource sharing and collaborative solution generation. More »

mHA is positioned at the leading edge of the mHealth ecosystem as a convener to unite existing mHealth projects and guide governments, NGOs and mobile firms to deliver innovative and interoperable solutions in this exploding field.

The idea for the mHealth Alliance emanated from a July 2008 conference in Bellagio, Italy on the future of mHealth, during which participants committed to forming a non-profit mHealth Alliance to maximize the impact of mobile health—especially in emerging economies—by ensuring interoperability and open-standards based solutions. Launched at the GSM Association Mobile World Congress in February 2009 by the United Nations Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation and Vodafone Foundation, the mHA now includes the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), GSM Association and HP among its founding partners.

nih logo

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for supporting and conducting biomedical and behavioral research and research training — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and cures for hundreds of common and some 6,000 rare diseases through the work of NIH’s 27 Institutes and Centers, providing leadership and financial support to researchers in every U.S. state, the territories, and throughout the world at more than 3,000 institutions. More »

NIH’s commitment to improving public health through scientific research includes leveraging existing and emerging approaches and technologies, often working at the innovative edge of science. Mobile health (or mHealth) is one such emerging technology and research area in which mobile devices are used as tools for research, public health outreach, healthcare training and decision support, and to expand the reach of biomedical and behavioral interventions to remote and underserved populations. Better understanding of disease and human behavior, promoting health and positive behavior change, disseminating health information, and supporting training for scientists are integral to NIH’s public health mission. The mHealth Summit, the mHealth research portfolio, and NIH interactions with others working in the mHealth space are means for the NIH to promote improvements in public health through the use, development, and evaluation of this important technology.
